Government opens a consultation looking at reform of cycling laws

14th August 2018

We welcome the opening of a consultation to look at the reform of cycling laws.

The Government has recently announced the opening of a consultation looking at reform of cycling laws. Through this consultation the Government:

“Invites views on government proposals to introduce new offences of causing death or serious injury while cycling, and other changes to some existing cycling offences.

It recognises the difficulties of trying to create general parity between cyclists and drivers in terms of licensing and insurance, for example, but seeks to more closely align penalties for offences that result in death or serious injury.”

In our view this consultation is to be welcomed. It is vital that the law evolves in a way that reflects the expectations of society and commands the confidence and respect of everyone.

This can only happen through effective engagement with all groups of road users.
