Personal Profiles, Professional Insights: Richard Jones, Corporate Partner

29th January 2025

Whether coaching his son’s under-10 football team or taking on ultra-marathons, Richard Jones thrives on a challenge. As a corporate partner at Blake Morgan, he channels that energy and focus into advising clients on private equity investments, restructures, and complex transactions.

Born and raised in Rhyl, North Wales, Richard’s passion for debating and problem-solving initially guided him towards a career in law. “It wasn’t something I’d ever planned, and I didn’t know any lawyers,” he admits.

But when my careers adviser suggested I consider studying law - mainly because I enjoyed a good argument - I thought, why not?

After studying law at Cardiff University, Richard joined Blake Morgan—then Morgan Cole—where he discovered his passion for corporate work. Twenty years later, he’s known for his pragmatic advice, ability to simplify complex issues, and dedication to his clients.

“It’s the human side of the job that keeps me motivated,” he says.

Helping clients navigate major moments in their business journey is what makes this work so rewarding.

When he’s not at the office, Welsh-speaking Richard is happiest spending time with his wife, Beth, and their two children in Cardiff. He’s a passionate music fan and an accomplished runner, completing several ultra-marathons, including a 24-hour race. With another ultra-marathon on the calendar this year, Richard jokes that his love for sporting challenges keeps him grounded:

“After a session coaching under tens at football, even the toughest corporate deal feels manageable!”

We caught up with Richard to learn more about his career, motivations, and life outside of work.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

For me, it’s the people. Corporate law is about so much more than contracts, and I get so much satisfaction guiding clients through pivotal moments in their lives. Whether helping a founder sell a business they’ve built over decades or supporting a company through a complex restructuring, you play a crucial role in their journey. That’s incredibly rewarding.

There’s also a highly creative element to it.

Corporate transactions are rarely straightforward. You need to think critically, weigh risks, and find solutions that work for all parties. It’s like a puzzle, and I relish that challenge.

How do you find time to balance work and family life?

It’s not always easy, but it’s important to me. My family keeps me grounded, and I prioritise spending time with them—whether it’s walking my kids to school, coaching my son’s football team, or enjoying all the wonderful nature South Wales has to offer.

Running helps me to recharge. I’ve completed several ultra-marathons, including a 24-hour race in which we aimed to run as far as possible from a starting point, which was apparently the exact centre of England. I almost made it to the Welsh border. This year, I’ve signed up for another one, and this time I’m determined to make it across Offa’s Dyke!

I also love live music and catch gigs as often as possible. Cardiff has many great venues, and I recently saw Vampire Weekend, a nostalgia trip I thoroughly enjoyed.

What’s the biggest challenge in your work, and how do you navigate it?

Deals can be emotionally charged, especially for business founders. Part of my role is to be a steadying presence and help them focus on the big picture.

It’s important to stay calm under pressure in this job and be that calm voice of pragmatism clients need to steer them through the stress of a high-stakes deal.

Corporate transactions often involve tight deadlines and high stakes, so staying focused and prioritising effectively is crucial. I’m fortunate to have a fantastic team at Blake Morgan, and we work closely to ensure every detail is covered.

What keeps you motivated?

A blend of factors motivates me. Professionally, I’m motivated by the tangible impact of my work. Helping a client secure an investment, complete an acquisition, or save a business during tough times is a reward in itself. Knowing you’ve made a difference is a great feeling.

On a personal level, my family and my hobbies keep me energised. Coaching my son’s football team, listening to music or reading books are entirely different from my day job, but they give me a different focus and help me return to work with fresh energy.

What advice would you give aspiring lawyers?

Don’t underestimate the value of clear communication. Clients don’t want to wade through jargon; they want straightforward, practical advice.

The ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical advice is one of the most important skills you can develop.

Building relationships is so important. Law is about people, and the connections you make early in your career will stay with you. So invest time and get to know the people you work with or hope to work with. That investment will pay dividends.

Finally, find something you love outside of work. Whether it’s sports, music, or family time, having an outlet helps you stay balanced and focused. A happy lawyer is a better lawyer!

Proffiliau Personol, Cipolwg Proffesiynol: Richard Jones, Partner Corfforaethol

Unai yn hyfforddi tîm pêl-droed dan 10 oed ei fab neu yn cymeryd rhan mewn ultra-farathonau, mae Richard Jones wrth ei fodd yn wynebu heriau. Fel partner corfforaethol yn Blake Morgan, mae’n sianelu’r egni a’r ffocws hwnnw i gynghori cleientiaid ar fuddsoddiadau, ad-drefniadau, a thrafodiadau cymhleth yn ymwneud ag ecwiti preifat.

Wedi ei eni a’i fagu yn y Rhyl, Gogledd Cymru, angerdd Richard am ddadlau a datrys problemau a arweiniodd ef yn y lle cyntaf tuag at yrfa yn y gyfraith. Doedd o ddim yn rhywbeth roeddwn i erioed wedi’i gynllunio, a doeddwn i ddim yn adnabod unrhyw gyfreithwyr,” mae’n cyfaddef.

Ond pan awgrymodd fy nghynghorydd gyrfaoedd i mi ystyried astudio’r gyfraith – yn bennaf gan fy mod yn mwynhau dadl dda meddyliais, pam lai?

Ar ôl astudio’r gyfraith ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, ymunodd Richard â Blake Morgan— Morgan Cole bryd hynny— lle darganfu ei angerdd am waith corfforaethol. Ugain mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, mae’n adnabyddus am ei gyngor pragmatig, ei allu i symleiddio materion cymhleth, a’i ymroddiad i’w gleientiaid.

Ochr ddynol y swydd sy’n fy ysgogi i,” meddai.

Helpu cleientiaid i lywio adegau mawr yn eu taith fusnes yw’r hyn sy’n gwneud y gwaith hwn mor werth chweil.”

Pan nad yw yn y swyddfa, mae Richard, sy’n siaradwr Cymraeg, yn hapusaf pan fydd yn treulio amser gyda’i wraig, Beth, a’u dau blentyn yng Nghaerdydd. Mae’n angerddol am gerddoriaeth ac yn redwr medrus, sydd wedi cwblhau sawl ultra-farathon, gan gynnwys ras 24 awr. Gydag ultra-farathon arall ar y calendr eleni, mae Richard yn gwamalu mai ei gariad at heriau chwaraeon yw’r hyn sy’n ei helpu i aros yn ‘bresennol’:

Ar ôl sesiwn hyfforddi pêl-droed i blant o dan 10 oed, mae hyd yn oed y cytundeb corfforaethol anoddaf yn teimlon rhwydd!”

Cawsom sgwrs â Richard i ddysgu mwy am ei yrfa, ei gymhellion, a’i fywyd y tu allan i’r gwaith.

Beth ydych chi’n ei fwynhau fwyaf am eich gwaith?

I mi – y bobl. Mae cyfraith gorfforaethol yn ymwneud â chymaint mwy na chontractau, ac rydw i’n cael cymaint o foddhad o arwain cleientiaid trwy adegau canolog yn eu bywydau. Unai drwy helpu sylfaenydd i werthu busnes y mae wedi’i adeiladu dros ddegawdau neu gefnogi cwmni trwy ailstrwythuro cymhleth, rydych chi’n chwarae rhan hanfodol yn eu taith. Mae hynny’n werth chweil.

Mae elfen hynod greadigol iddo hefyd.

Anaml y mae trafodiadau corfforaethol yn syml. Mae angen i chi feddwl yn feirniadol, pwyso a mesur risgiau, a dod o hyd i atebion sy’n gweithio i’r holl bartïon. Mae fel pysl, ac rydw i wrth fy modd â‘r her honno.”

Sut ydych chi’n dod o hyd i amser i gydbwyso bywyd gwaith a bywyd teuluol?

Dydi pethau ddim bob amser yn hawdd, ond mae’n bwysig i mi. Mae fy nheulu yn fy nghadw i’n gytbwys, ac rwy’n blaenoriaethu treulio amser gyda nhw — boed hynny’n cerdded fy mhlant i’r ysgol, yn hyfforddi tîm pêl-droed fy mab, neu’n mwynhau’r holl natur hyfryd sydd gan Dde Cymru i’w gynnig.

Mae rhedeg yn fy helpu i fagu nerth newydd. Rydw i wedi cwblhau sawl ultra-farathon, gan gynnwys ras 24 awr lle’r oeddem yn anelu at redeg mor bell â phosibl o fan cychwyn, sef union ganolbwynt Lloegr yn ôl pob tebyg. Bu bron i mi gyrraedd ffin Cymru. Eleni, rydw i wedi cofrestru ar gyfer un arall, a’r tro hwn rydw i’n benderfynol o’i gwneud hi ar draws Clawdd Offa!

Rydw i hefyd yn hoff iawn o gerddoriaeth fyw ac yn mynd i gigs mor aml â phosib. Mae gan Gaerdydd lawer o leoliadau gwych, ac yn ddiweddar gwelais Vampire Weekend.

Beth yw’r her fwyaf yn eich gwaith, a sut ydych chi’n ymdopi â hynny?

Gall cytundebau fod yn llawn emosiwn, yn enwedig i sefydlwyr busnes. Rhan o’m rôl yw bod yn bresenoldeb sefydlog a’u helpu i ganolbwyntio ar y darlun mawr.

Mae’n bwysig peidio â chynhyrfu o dan bwysau yn y swydd hon ac ymgorffori’r llais digynnwrf hwnnw o bragmatiaeth sydd ei angen ar gleientiaid i’w llywio drwy’r straen sy’n gysylltiedig â chytundeb arian mawr.”

Mae trafodiadau corfforaethol yn aml yn cynnwys terfynau amser tyn ac arian mawr, felly mae cadw ffocws a blaenoriaethu’n effeithiol yn hanfodol. Rydw i’n ffodus i gael tîm gwych yn Blake Morgan, ac rydym yn gweithio’n agos i sicrhau bod pob manylyn yn cael sylw.

Beth sy’n cynnal eich cymhelliant?

Mae cyfuniad o bethau yn fy ysgogi. Yn broffesiynol, rwy’n cael fy ysgogi gan effaith diriaethol fy ngwaith. Mae helpu cleient i sicrhau buddsoddiad, i gwblhau caffaeliad, neu achub busnes yn ystod cyfnod anodd yn wobr ynddo’i hun. Mae gwybod eich bod wedi gwneud gwahaniaeth yn deimlad gwych.

Ar lefel bersonol, mae fy nheulu a fy hobïau yn fy nghadw’n llawn egni. Mae hyfforddi tîm pêl-droed fy mab, gwrando ar gerddoriaeth neu ddarllen llyfrau yn hollol wahanol i fy swydd bob dydd, ond mae nhw’n rhoi ffocws gwahanol i mi ac yn fy helpu i ddychwelyd i’r gwaith gydag egni newydd.

Pa gyngor fyddech chi’n ei roi i ddarpar gyfreithwyr?

Peidiwch â bychanu pa mor bwysig yw cyfathrebu yn glir. Dydi cleientiaid ddim eisiau llafurio trwy jargon; mae nhw eisiau cyngor syml ac ymarferol.”

Mae’r gallu i drosi materion cyfreithiol cymhleth yn gyngor clir ac ymarferol yn un o’r sgiliau pwysicaf y gallwch ei ddatblygu.

Mae adeiladu cydberthynasau mor bwysig. Mae’r gyfraith yn ymwneud â phobl, a bydd y cysylltiadau a wnewch yn gynnar yn eich gyrfa yn aros gyda chi. Felly buddsoddwch amser a dewch i adnabod y bobl rydych chi’n gweithio gyda nhw neu’n gobeithio gweithio gyda nhw. Bydd y buddsoddiad hwnnw yn talu ar ei ganfed.

Yn olaf, dewch o hyd i rywbeth rydych chi’n ei garu y tu allan i’r gwaith – chwaraeon, cerddoriaeth, neu amser gyda’ch teulu, mae bod â gollyngfa yn eich helpu i aros yn gytbwys ac i gadw eich ffocws. Mae cyfreithiwr hapus yn well cyfreithiwr!
