Blake Morgan co-sponsors statue honouring Wales’ first black head teacher
A statue of Betty Campbell was unveiled outside the HMRC building in Central Square in Cardiff on Wednesday 29 September. Betty Campbell is Wales’ first black head teacher who was known for paving the way to equality and diversity in the Welsh capital and beyond. The statue is the first of a named, non-fictional, Welsh woman in Wales and we are incredibly proud to say that Blake Morgan co-sponsored the statue.
Betty Campbell’s monument has been designed and created by renowned sculptor Eve Shepherd. The powerful monument provides a visual narrative of the life of a woman from Butetown who was told as a child by her teacher that a working-class black girl could never achieve the academic heights she aspired to. She proved her doubters wrong in the most inspirational way.
Helen Molyneux, Chair of the Monumental Welsh Women committee said:
The monument is unique, bold and a refreshingly different presentation of a figurative work in the public realm. It presents a rich artistic interpretation of Betty Campbell's life and achievements in one powerful, sculptural form.
The organisation behind the statue, Monumental Welsh Women, aim to normalise female ambition and success by celebrating and commemorating the achievements of great Welsh women and inspiring the next generation. They hope to commission five statues of five notable Welsh women in the next five years.
